Who we are
Intangible assets including intellectual property (IP) account for over 70% of many companies’ enterprise value. But IP issues are often not identified and communicated in a way that enables management, their advisors and investors to understand and react within the tight timeframes that dominate corporate decision making.
Understanding the problem is key to our success
Aistemos, founded by Nigel Swycher (former head of the intellectual practice at Slaughter and May and recognised IAM IP Strategy expert), was established to provide IP business intelligence in a form and at a speed that can be understood and used across an organisation. Aistemos believes that involving IP in decision-making across teams requires access to the right information at the right time. As the quantity and complexity of data relating to patents, disputes, licenses and standards proliferates it has become harder than ever before for companies to understand what’s going on.
In the Aistemos Strategy Report (April 2017), Nigel states “In a world where innovation is the life and soul of major companies, it is essential that there are reliable ways to measure and compare performance. In five years, we will be faintly amused that it took so long to bring transparency and understanding to the world of IP”.
Aistemos is committed to creating the environment where intellectual property is a vibrant asset class, understood by the entire business community and not isolated by the centuries of science captured within its walls.
Harnessing insight using AI
By applying AI and machine learning to comprehensive IP data, we have developed a definitive source of business intelligence optimised to help companies understand complex technology landscapes.
Our audience is a unique blend of those responsible for meeting the challenges posed by disruption across the many sectors impacted by technology: think automotive, retail, media, financial services, retail – in fact, there’s disruption all around. With this fresh challenge, infinite opportunities unfold. As revealed in our recent IP Strategy Report there is now pressure form the board, from regulators and investors to find out more.
Aistemos has been observing the evolution of IP as an asset class since the start, and Cipher is our response. More data, better access, clearer presentation – fast. Cipher is not a specialist patent tool confined to those who prepare and file individual patents. Cipher is the first accessible source of IP business intelligence to support the decisions which will ultimately define who will succeed and who will be the next Kodak, Nortel or Nokia phone.
Cipher has been adopted by world-class companies such as BAE Systems, ARM, Nestlé, and Ocado. We are often asked why Cipher has been so warmly received: “We actually listened to what industry wanted and that became our roadmap. We estimate that half of the Cipher UI and features are a direct result of customer interaction” is the view of Steve Harris, Aistemos CTO.
Our vision is to provide IP analytics to the teams who drive the innovation agenda
Aistemos does not underestimate the complexity of understanding the IP landscape. The advantage we have is that our roots are in the community that has been looking for solutions for over 30 years. The next step is to improve access to data for those driving the innovation agenda within companies and which is essential to decision making – this has been out of reach for too long.
Do not underestimate the ability of AI to help. Steve adds “some of the things Cipher can do are practically impossible for humans, and were prohibitively expensive for machines until a few years ago”
